Another rainy weekend
stomps towards me in big rubber boots
and a big dumb smile, as if to say,
“It’s just you and me buddy.”
Halloween was only here for a day,
with her costume and pillowcase full of candy,
bragging about all the parties that
I wasn't invited to.
Before that, Summer lingered for a while,
sharing all sorts of photos of friends
in bathing suits at the river,
on vacation, in love
It won’t be long now, until this year
gathers up all the days that weren’t truly lived,
the days that weren’t stapled to a memory,
and crams them into a brown leather duffel.
After, he’ll bundle up in his gray peacoat
and houndstooth fedora and make his way
to the train station, where he’ll meet up with
the years of others, each quietly disappointed
with their own overstuffed duffels
filled with the days of unlived lives,
destined to be destroyed by
the hungry fire of Time.
